    Common Aquarium Plants and Requirements
I know Anthony linked you to this already, but linking again being it still answers the question.

for growing plants you can use flourescent lighting, power compacts, T5HO's, etc....it's just certain types of lighting are better in the sense that they are a)cheaper to run b)provide better "concentrated" lighting c)cheaper when it comes to replacing the bulbs..which is usually anywhere from every 6mos to 12+mos.

Planted tanks and lighting can get quite technical it all depends on what you want and what you can afford. If new to planted tanks read, google, and read some more before setting up your tank. If your starting with plants go with Java ferns or java moss. they can handle just about anything.

Nothing too special actually. What matters most will be light intensity. The more light you have, the more likely you will need to dose fertilizers and inject CO2.
